E.M.C.I. Associate Certified Surveyor

The Yacht surveyor is an EMCI-certified company, but what does this actually mean and what are the benefits for you as a client?

Certification

Since January 1, 2002, the certification requirement for several professions, including yacht brokers and yacht surveyors, has been abolished. This meant the government ended the quality assurance for these professions, making the profession of pleasure craft expert, for example, a liberal profession. In other words, anyone could claim to be a pleasure craft expert. This government measure was perceived as problematic by the water sports industry and maritime professional groups. There were justified fears that the quality and professionalism of the previously certified professions would decline. Shipyards, yacht brokers, consumers, and previously certified surveyors anticipated major problems due to the potential proliferation of lower-level survey agencies with insufficient expertise, which, moreover, would have no obligation to adhere to professional standards.

The Origin of EMCI

The discontinuation of the sworn certification and its resulting consequences created a need for an umbrella certification body. On May 5, 2003, the EMCI (European Maritime Certification Institute) was established. EMCI is an independent and autonomous organization that, among other things, certifies maritime professions and companies. EMCI also provides quality assurance and registration for certified pleasure craft surveyors, among other services. EMCI also operates a guarantee committee, a complaints committee, and a dispute committee that consumers can rely on if they are dissatisfied with the pleasure craft surveyor certified by an EMCI.

The Benefits of an EMCI-Certified Surveyor

Choosing an EMCI-certified surveyor certainly has advantages. You are assured that the surveyor in question meets minimum quality requirements and has extensive experience in surveying and valuing pleasure craft. Furthermore, an EMCI surveyor is always up-to-date on the latest techniques and developments in yacht building through mandatory continuing education. If, for any reason, you are dissatisfied with the expert's services, you, as the client, can rely on a dispute resolution committee that mediates in any disputes.
